The MoneyNorthStar difference

True exposure — look through your ETFs to see what you actually own.

Owning VTI, QQQ, and VOO is not the same as owning three different things. MoneyNorthStar aggregates direct stock holdings with ETF constituent look-through so you see your real company, sector, and asset-class exposure.

True company exposure

For every company in your portfolio, see direct value, indirect value through funds, total value, percent of your public portfolio, percent of net worth, and the sources — which accounts and which ETFs hold it.

Example: Nvidia exposure = direct NVDA shares + NVDA inside QQQ + VTI + VOO.

Direct holdingsStocks you own by name
Indirect holdingsWeight × fund value
Coverage metricKnow when look-through is incomplete
Unresolved fundsShown honestly, never guessed

ETF overlap

Compare two or more funds you own and reveal the companies that appear in more than one. See weight in each ETF, dollar exposure from each, and total indirect exposure — so you understand why you may be less diversified than you thought.

Sector allocation

Sector exposure after look-through, compared to your own targets. Drift is labeled as above or below target — never as buy, sell, or rebalance advice. Top contributors per sector keep the story concrete.

What Moved Me

Daily estimated impact from true exposure × price change. See top positive and negative contributors, net public-market move, and whether each move came through direct shares or funds. Always labeled as an estimate based on available holdings and price data.

Holdings & fund data

Manual holdings CRUD with optional CSV import. Full ETF constituent sets for funds like VTI, VOO, SPY, QQQ, SCHD, BND, and more — plus fund aliases so equivalent share classes share data. End-of-day prices sync for valuation and What Moved Me.

Wealth assets

One picture across cash, investments, real estate, and private credit.

Net worth always traces to a real owned object — an account, holding, property, private loan, or valuable item. No free-form “adjust my net worth” shortcuts that hide the truth.

Wealth dashboard

Your calm cockpit: net worth, assets, liabilities, cash, public investments, real estate equity, private loans, business and other assets. Asset-class allocation, top company and sector exposures, concentration alerts, and recent activity — without turning into a planning maze.

Cash optimizer

Track cash balances, APY, estimated annual interest, and weighted average yield. Surface lazy cash below your threshold, FDIC concentration above $250k at one institution, and allocation drift versus your cash target — in review language, not “open this HYSA” pitches.

Real estate

Properties with estimated value, mortgage, HELOC, other debt, and equity. Track rent, expenses, cash flow, and valuation dates. Alerts for stale valuations, negative equity, and missing mortgage data keep the numbers honest.

Private loans

Hard money loans and private notes: principal, balance, rate, points, maturity, collateral, LTV, and status. See expected annual interest, upcoming maturities, borrower concentration, and late or defaulted loans before they surprise you.

Valuable items

Vehicles, cash on hand, safe deposit contents, jewelry, collectibles — named items with a value and valuation date. The only sanctioned way to add “other stuff” to net worth, with stale-value alerts when appraisals age past 180 days.

Your targets, your rules

Set cash, equity, real estate, private credit, crypto, and sector targets yourself. MoneyNorthStar compares current allocation to your targets and flags drift — it never invents a “correct” portfolio for you.

Classic money tracking

Simple day-to-day finance, without the noise.

Manual-first and CSV-friendly. No bank API required. Fast lists, plain English, and progressive disclosure so spending stays understandable while wealth intelligence stays available when you want it.

Accounts

Checking, savings, credit cards, cash, investment, retirement, real estate, private loans, business, crypto, and more. Computed balances from starting balance plus transactions — or from holdings for investment accounts. Quick “set balance” to match your institution without rewriting history.

Transactions

Paginated lists with account, category, and payee filters. Inline edit, apply-to-similar, bulk categorize, and deterministic auto-categorization from your history and a merchant keyword map. Transfers and card payments stay out of spending totals.

CSV import

Upload bank or broker CSV downloads. Preview before confirm, skip duplicates safely, undo a batch, or reassign imported rows to another account. Category columns map when possible; otherwise auto-categorize kicks in.

Review queue

One uncategorized transaction at a time, biggest amounts first. Apply-to-similar when lookalikes exist. Optional AI suggestions for the next 25 payees — stored as suggestions you accept, never auto-applied.

Categories

Familiar spending category groups with totals and date-range presets. See where money went without envelope-style budgeting — organize activity for clarity, not monthly limits. Custom categories you control.

Trends

Twelve-month net worth trajectory, income vs spending, top categories, and top merchants — with dark-mode-aware charts and dollar-formatted tooltips. Snapshots capture as you use the app.

AI explanations, not AI guessing

Plain-English digests of calculated facts — never trade recommendations.

Insights summarize what changed, what moved, concentrations, sector drift, cash issues, loan maturities, and stale or missing data. AI can only explain numbers the app already computed. A deterministic filter blocks forbidden advice language like buy, sell, or “rebalance into.”

“Your top 5 public-company exposures represent 31% of your public portfolio. Nvidia is your largest true exposure because you own it directly and indirectly through QQQ and VTI. Your technology exposure is 16 percentage points above your user-defined target.”

Rules-based alerts

  • Uncategorized or large unknown transactions
  • Cash APY below your threshold or FDIC concentration
  • Top company or top-5 concentration above your limits
  • Sector drift beyond your targets
  • Missing ETF constituent data for funds you own
  • Private loan maturities, late status, borrower concentration
  • Stale property valuations and outdated holding prices

What we will never do

  • Tell you what to buy or sell
  • Recommend specific trades or personalized portfolios
  • Claim expected returns or “safe” investments
  • Provide tax, legal, or financial advice
  • Invent ETF holdings when constituent data is missing

MoneyNorthStar is an informational and organizational dashboard — not a robo-advisor.
